Increase in Paid Holiday (June 2009)

Paid holiday increases to 28 days a year (pro-rata) from 1st April 2009.

This new statutory entitlement of 28 days includes statutory or bank holidays. If your employees currently receive at least 20 days paid holiday a year plus bank holidays, then they already receive the equivalent of the new statutory entitlement. They will not be entitled to any additional holiday.

If your employees currently receive less than this statutory minimum then you need to let them know about their increased holiday entitlement in writing. You will also need to change your standard terms and conditions of employment and any staff handbook to reflect these changes.

Employees who work part-time are entitled to a pro-rata amount e.g 5.6 x their usual working week.

This is, of course, a minimum entitlement and you can choose to offer more.
